Opinel is one of France’s most recognisable knife makers, producing simple, beautifully functional knives since 1890. Founded by Joseph Opinel in the Alpine region of Savoie, the company has remained family owned for generations, continuing to make tools that stay true to the original design.
The classic Opinel knife is instantly recognisable: a slender blade paired with a comfortable wooden handle and the patented Virobloc® safety ring, which locks the blade securely in place when open or closed. This straightforward design has changed very little over the years, and it remains popular for its practicality, light weight and dependable cutting performance.
Many Opinel knives are made from either traditional carbon steel, which takes an extremely sharp edge and is easy to maintain, or a stainless steel developed specifically for Opinel that offers good corrosion resistance while remaining easy to sharpen. The handles are typically made from sustainably sourced beechwood, shaped to sit comfortably in the hand.
