Knife Sharpening for Beginners

Ever fancied learning how to sharpen your own knives?
Tried in the past but worried about ruining them?
Had a whetstone for years but never got round to using it?

Sharpening on traditional whetstones can be tricky — but fear not.
We’ve sharpened thousands of knives over the years, and we’re confident that after spending a couple of hours on our Knife Sharpening for Beginners course, you’ll leave with a new-found confidence in your own ability.

What the Course Covers

Run in small groups of 4–5 people at our Ilkley workshop, our 2-hour sessions include:

  • The essential sharpening theory to underpin your practical work

  • A detailed demonstration of proper technique for achieving a great edge

  • Guided hands-on practice under the supervision of an experienced whetstone sharpener

This course is about teaching you how to sharpen your own knives, so please bring up to four from home to work on.

What’s Included

Your course fee includes:

  • A strop to maintain your freshly sharpened knives at home (RRP £18)

  • Access to a mobile-optimised guide featuring demonstrations and key sharpening theory

We run sharpening classes all year, except during July, August, December, and January.
