End Grain vs Edge Grain – What’s the Difference?
Most wooden boards you’ll see are edge grain: the tree is sliced lengthways, the planks are laid on their sides, and you end up cutting across long fibres. Perfectly functional — but not the easiest on your knife.

End grain boards are built differently. Those long slices are cut, rotated, and stacked into a pattern before being glued and planed into these chunky blocks. You’re now cutting down onto the ends of the grain, which allows the fibres to part and spring back. This is far gentler on your blade, helping reduce edge damage and extend the time between sharpenings. It’s why end grain remains our favourite style of board at Community Cutlery — the fact they look stunning doesn’t hurt either.

Handmade Craft – Size & Variations
Each board is made by hand to an approximate specification: around 300mm x 200mm x 65mm Because of their handmade nature, patterns and tones vary from piece to piece. If you’d like current photos of the exact boards in stock, just drop us a message — we’re always happy to help.

Care & Maintenance
To keep your board in top condition, wash the surface with warm water and mild soap, then air-dry upright. Avoid soaking, dishwashers, and direct heat such as radiators.
Apply a food-safe mineral oil or wax periodically to nourish the wood, reduce absorption, and keep the surface looking fresh. Regular care will help your board age beautifully and stay stable for years of use.

We ship Tuesday to Saturday using Royal Mail Tracked 24.

All knives ship via an age verified service in accordance with The Offensive Weapons Act 2019, which will mean the postie will need you to be in to receive the delivery & to check your ID if you look under 25.

The law also requires us to carry out a soft age check of the purchaser after checkout, this is done by an automated system that usually doesn't require your input, although we will need to contact you for proof of age if you fail, which can sometimes happen if you use a work address.
