End Grain vs Edge Grain — What’s the Difference?
Yes, end grain boards cost more than edge grain — and with good reason. Most wooden boards you see in shops are edge grain: long slices of timber laid on their sides, with the grain running along the board as you cut down onto its edge. Functional, perfectly serviceable… but not the whole story.

Why Choose End Grain?
End grain boards are made differently. Those long slices of timber are stacked, patterned, glued, and planed into thick, reassuring blocks — so instead of cutting across the grain, you’re cutting down into the ends of the fibres.
This construction is far kinder to your knife edge, reducing micro-damage and helping you go longer between sharpenings. It’s why end grain is our favourite style of board here at Community Cutlery. The fact they look absolutely beautiful certainly doesn’t hurt.

Each board is made by hand and typically falls around 400 × 300 mm, though every piece varies slightly in pattern and tone.

We ship Tuesday to Saturday using Royal Mail Tracked 24.
All knives ship via an age verified service in accordance with The Offensive Weapons Act 2019, which will mean the postie will need you to be in to receive the delivery & to check your ID if you look under 25.
The law also requires us to carry out a soft age check of the purchaser after checkout, this is done by an automated system that usually doesn't require your input, although we will need to contact you for proof of age if you fail, which can sometimes happen if you use a work address.
