My Spoon Kit

Another one we absolutely love. My Spoon Kit is a brilliantly simple little DIY kit from Japan for carving your very own wooden spoon – and this one is a great place to start if you’ve never tried anything like this before.

The spoon blank is made from Hinoki, or Japanese cypress, a lovely soft wood that’s relatively easy to carve by hand. Start with the roughly shaped blank and gradually work away at it with a small knife, refining the bowl, handle and edges until it feels just right. Make it neat and precise or leave it a little rustic – it’s your spoon.

Once you’re happy with the shape, use the three grades of sandpaper to smooth everything down before finishing it with the included beeswax. Hinoki also has a wonderful, distinctive natural scent, which makes the whole process particularly satisfying.

At around 20cm long, the finished spoon is a really useful size for curry, soup and everyday eating. A great little project, a brilliant gift and, best of all, you end up with something you’ll actually use.

Hinoki

Hinoki is a Japanese cypress traditionally valued for its beautiful pale colour, fine grain and distinctive natural aroma. It's a relatively soft wood, making this kit particularly approachable for anyone having their first go at carving.

As a natural material, the colour and grain will vary slightly from piece to piece.

Tools Required

You’ll need a small carving knife, penknife or suitable craft knife. Tools are not included with the kit.
