The Petty is a small, versatile Japanese kitchen knife, ideal for jobs where a full-sized chef's knife feels a little too large. Perfect for preparing fruit and vegetables, trimming meat and more detailed work, it's a useful addition to any kitchen.

At 150mm, this Petty offers a little more reach than a traditional paring knife while remaining compact and easy to control.

Knife Shape & Finish

The blade features a Migaki finish, a Japanese term meaning polished. This smooth, clean finish gives the knife a simple, refined appearance, with the steel itself taking centre stage rather than a hammered or textured surface.

The knife is finished with a Western-style pakkawood handle, combining the familiar shape of a traditional Western knife handle with the durability and moisture resistance of laminated wood.

About Ohishi

The Ohishi name has a lovely connection to both food and place. Oishii is the Japanese word for “delicious”, while Ohishi is also the name of a small village near Mount Fuji where the business began.

The brand was created around a simple idea: making thoughtfully designed, finely tuned kitchen knives to help people make delicious food — “oishii” meals made with Ohishi knives.

Steel & Construction

The blade uses VG5, a Japanese stainless cutlery steel designed to offer a good balance of sharpness, edge retention and ease of maintenance.

VG5 is capable of taking a fine cutting edge while offering good resistance to corrosion. It provides a practical combination of everyday cutting performance and durability, making it a good choice for a versatile kitchen knife such as a Santoku.

Steel Care

VG5 is stainless and relatively low maintenance compared with traditional carbon steels. We still recommend hand washing the knife after use and drying it thoroughly before storing.

Never put a Japanese kitchen knife in the dishwasher. Use a wooden or rubber chopping board and avoid cutting frozen foods, bones or other very hard ingredients that could damage the cutting edge.
